内容記述 This paper examines the grammatical interpretations of the word ‘Buddha’ found in Pali and Sanskrit literature. As the eminent grammarian Bhartrhari (c. fifth–sixth CE) states in his Vākyapadīya 2.170, various grammatical analyses are allowed for a single word, and different interpretations are chosen depending on their context and purpose. The various interpretations of the word ‘Buddha’ are shaped by the diverse perspectives on the concept of the Buddha.
1. The word ‘Buddha’ is interpreted as denoting one who has been recognized (buddha) by noble ones as a completely and perfectly enlightened one (sammāsaṃbuddho). This is analyzed as a word form in which the past passive participle affix Kta is introduced to the verbal root budh in the
sense of an object (karman) (cf. A 1.1.26, 3.2.102, and 3.4.70).
2. The word ‘Buddha’ is derived from the verbal root budh, with the past participle affix Kta introduced to indicate an agent (kartr). There are two different grammatical justifications for introducing this affix: one in which the verbal root budh is understood as an intransitive verb (akarmaka),
and the other in which it functions as a transitive verb (sakarmaka) and also denotes movement (gatyartha) (cf. A 3.4.72). In the first interpretation, it means one who became awake. In the second interpretation, it can be used to express, for example, one who knew the norms of the four
truths (catusaccadhamme buddho ’ti buddho).
3. When the word ‘Buddha’ is analyzed as denoting one who knew everything (sarvam. buddhavān iti buddhaḥ), the verbal root budh is used as a transitive verb, but it does not indicate movement. Here, it is difficult to justify the introduction of the affix Kta according to Pān. ini’s A 3.4.72. Some Buddhists attempted to resolve this issue by either allowing an exception to the rule (cf. Kavikāmadhenu on Amarakośa 1.1.13) or by formulating their own rules (cf. Kacc 559/4.2.8 and Sadd 1144).
4. The word ‘Buddha’ is interpreted as denoting one who possesses praiseworthy enlightenment (praśastā asya buddhir iti buddhaḥ). This interpretation is grammatically based on the rules for the second derivative affix matUP, namely, A 5.2.94, 5.2.127, and the relevant Ślokavārttika. It is also understood through the application of the affix matUP to mean one who has enlightenment (buddham assa atthi), with its grammatical basis found in Kātyāyana’s vārttika 3 on A 5.2.94.
5. The ‘Buddha’ can be understood in the sense of an agent treated as an object (karmakartr) according to A 3.1.87. As in the expression svayaṃ budhyate ([awakening] awakens by itself), it conveys the ease or smoothness of the act of awakening.
6. The word ‘Buddha’ can also convey the sense of an agent who instigates [someone to act] (prayojakakartr), it can be understood as denoting one who makes sentient beings attain awakening (bodhetā pajāyā ’ti buddho). The basis for this interpretation is Patañjali’s grammatical device, namely,
parṇaśuṣivat, which results in the luk-deletion of the causative affixṆiC (cf. MBh on A 7.4.65).
