内容記述 Appreciating educational value of non-subject school activities and its effective use have been a prominent distinction of Japanese school. However, in the early stage of educational development that modeled on Western countries, there was scarcely such activity in schools. In the latter half of the 1880s, in the process of developing a peculiar nationalistic education, Mori Arinori, the first minister of education, introduced in his own way a solemn school ceremony into schools on the days of national holiday. Mori aimed to develop a royal and patriotic sentiment among students through a series of formalities that include making a profound obeisance to the portrait of emperor and empress and singing a song in praise of the Imperial Household. In 1891, the government issued the official regulation on school ceremony in which formalized the proceedings of the ceremony adding a respectful reading of the Imperial Rescript on Education. At the same time, the ministry of education recommended to hold some delightful event or entertainment following the ceremony. Emerging from those incipient activities, a variety of typical school events such as athletic meeting, excursion, arts festival and exhibition of student’s work were gradually developed. Parents and community members were also invited to these school ceremony and activities. In accordance with a wartime situation in the 1930s, school ceremony took on an air of quasi-religious or ultra-nationalistic aspect.
After the World WarⅡ, the occupation authority ordered that a fanatic school ceremony of this kind should be discontinued. Instead of them, they recommended organizing autonomous activities among students such as student council, classroom meeting and club activities. These activities promptly took root in Japanese soil. Other school events were revived and performed in more democratic style. With the increasing appreciation of the educational value of these extracurricular activities, in 1958, the government decided to include these activities formally in the national curriculum. In addition to traditional events, schools are often demanded to take charge of new kind of events that are emerging from the changing times. In the increasing congested circumstances, Japanese school are warried about a careful selection of school event.
It is said that some developing countries have wanted to introduce Japanese-style “tokkatsu” into their schools. However, these activities are a practice deeply rooted in the Japanese tradition, so it is not sure that these non-subject activities would be compatible with their traditional view of schooling and their school culture.
