The number of universities strengthening their relations with their alumni is increasing. Every university seeks various kinds of support from its alumni, and alumni respond accordingly. However, if universities request support from their alumni, should they not show them the consideration of providing support and conveniences? With an awareness of the issue, this article examines alumni services beings offered by universities. It reports on the current status of and the issues involved in alumni services at Japanese universities based on the above-mentioned results and personal interviews that were conducted at leading universities along with the survey. The state of alumni services in Japanese universities has not previously been made clear. Therefore, in March, 2013 a questionnaire was sent to all 771 Japanese universities―both private and national, and the state of their alumni services was examined. The results of the collected questionnaires indicated that nearly all universities provided some form of alumni services. Among other things, they were actively developing initiatives linked to both supporting alumni in finding employment and changing jobs and also to maintaining relations between alumni and the university. As for the purpose of providing alumni services, a number of universities listed “maintaining relationships between the university and alumni" and “improving interests in the alma mater." Alumni were also seeking support from their alma maters. As an issue related to the implementation of alumni services, there were many universities acquiring information about their alumni and handling their personal data. A task for every university is a thorough assessment of its own unique way of thinking about and providing services for alumni. |
