Detrital zircon U–Pb dating of (meta-) sedimentary rocks provides insights into 1)constraining the maximum depositional age, 2) estimating the provenance terrane, 3)characterizing the timing of continental growth and supercontinent cycling, and 4) trackingthe "lost (micro-) continental rocks/units". Consequently, this method has become increasinglypopular in the international geoscience community in recent years. However, detrital zircongrains in (meta-) sedimentary rocks are known to have a wide range of source rocks, resulting invarious sizes, shapes, and colors. These characteristics indicate that the different ages of detritalzircon grains display distinct visual appearances. This, in turn, means that preferential zircongrain selection during separation, mounting, and U–Pb measurement processes has resultedin human-biased detrital zircon age spectra. For this reason, unbiased, quick, and easy detritalzircon separation, mounting, and U–Pb measurements are essential, especially for 2) provenanceanalysis, as they include a discussion based on the percentage of specific aged components.Therefore, an effective zircon separation method, mounting flow, and spot selection process forunbiased detrital zircon U–Pb dating are introduced in this paper to better understand the preciseage spectra of detrital zircon grains. Our proposed detrital zircon U–Pb dating process includesa) mounting all the heavy and nonmagnetic minerals, including zircon, and b) not selecting thezircon grains mounted in a given area. Our proposed technique makes it possible to reveal theactual detrital zircon age spectra to better understand the provenance terrane of the target (meta-)sedimentary rocks. The LA–ICP–MS detrital zircon dating results of the four sandstones fromthe Kuga Group of the Tamba Belt, Southwest Japan, are presented as examples of unbiaseddetrital zircon U–Pb dating, as they include multiple provenances with different visualities, viz.,the ~1.9–1.8 Ga dominant Paleoproterozoic population with subordinate Late Paleozoic to EarlyMesozoic detrital zircon grains. |
