In modern society, individuals frequently encounter numbers and quantities that exceed their personal perception, making the development of instructional plans to nurture quantity sense from elementary to junior high school an urgent issue. Therefore, this study aimed to identify current challenges with the goal of developing a systematic curriculum for fostering quantity sense across these grade levels. To achieve this objective, case studies—including fact-finding surveys and the development and implementation of original lessons—were conducted targeting upper elementary students (5th and 6th grades) and junior high school students (7th, 8th, and 9th grades). The results revealed that students face significant challenges in converting imperceptible large and small numbers into a range they can personally perceive. Furthermore, the study concluded that to realize smooth interaction through numbers and quantities, it is necessary to foster an "eye" for recognizing numbers hidden in daily life—such as numerical rules regarding visibility—and to develop communication skills that effectively utilize numbers and quantities. |
