This study was conducted collaboratively by multiple elementary, junior high, and university educators with the following objectives: developing lessons that utilize and enhance children's spatial reasoning; examining the role of teachers in lessons utilizing spatial reasoning; and conducting a survey on children's awareness, attitudes, and cognitive aspects regarding space. The results revealed three key findings from lessons designed to promote spatial reasoning among elementary and junior high school students: Students were observed representing three-dimensional space using two-dimensional representations, with shifting viewpoints deepening their understanding. Collaboration with peers and teacher questioning supported their reasoning. Based on Davis et al.'s (2015) framework, diverse spatial reasoning skills were confirmed to operate in an emergent manner. Furthermore, surveys of students' actual conditions revealed that spatial reasoning develops gradually, linked to life experiences. Third-grade elementary students were often in a state of “seeing but unable to explain,” indicating they are in a transitional phase toward verbalization. |
