| 内容記述 | The purpose of this study is to report on a classroom-based translation project conducted in the English Professional Training Program at Hiroshima University. The project centered on the translation of the official Mihara Garden website, providing authentic material for learners to experience real-world language use. The instructional design incorporated a multi-step translation process consisting of pre-editing, AI translation, post-editing, and collaborative translation. Data were collected through written reflections from four participants—one Japanese L1 speaker and three Chinese L1 speakers—and analyzed qualitatively using thematic analysis. The results revealed several key learning outcomes. First, learners recognized the importance of pre-editing to clarify ambiguous Japanese source texts and prevent mistranslation. Second, AI translation functioned as a comparative reference rather than a source of ready-made answers; learners engaged critically with AI output and revised it based on context, pragmatics, and appropriateness for the target readership. Third, challenges related to cultural equivalence prompted learners to consider how culture-specific concepts, such as oyado (Japanese-style lodging), should be conveyed for international audiences. Fourth, collaborative translation provided opportunities for mutual scaffolding, perspective-sharing, and metacognitive reflection. The findings suggest that translation activities, when combined with authentic materials and critical use of AI translation tools, foster learners’ contextual understanding, pragmatic awareness, cultural sensitivity, and critical AI literacy. While the study is limited by its small sample size and qualitative nature, it offers a pedagogically meaningful model for translation based language education in the age of generative AI. | |||||||||
