| 内容記述 | In recent years, there has been increasing interest in how parents should praise or scoldtheir children. Although there have been many attempts to categorize praise and scolding fromdifferent perspectives, no study to date has simultaneously examined these behaviors specificallyin terms of parents’ targets, reasons, and intentions. In addition, while some studies havecategorized the intent behind praise, they have mainly focused on parents’ long-term expectationsand ignored short-term ones. This study aimed to classify the targets, reasons, and intentions forparents’ praising and scolding of their children. A total of 129 parents of children aged 3 yearsand 7 months to 6 years and 5 months were asked three questions: what kinds of things theypraised or scolded their children for and the words they used when do so; the reasons for praisingor scolding their children; and their intentions behind these actions. Using the KJ method, theresults revealed that common categories for the targets of praise and scolding focused onchildren’s abilities and outcomes. In addition, the reasons parents provided for their actionsshowed that they praise and scold with an awareness of what actions and thoughts are generallyconsidered good in society, while also considering their children’s futures. Regarding theirintentions behind praising and scolding, the study reveals that parents are conscious of nonverbalelements—such as making eye contact and talking to their children directly—and of beingspecific about what they were praising or scolding. | |||||||||||||
