This paper aims to explore the approach to scaff olding provided by instructors by clarifying how learners tackle problem solving, focusing on the educational practice of opera production by university students. According to prior research, three types of scaffolding exist: ① communicating process, ② coaching, and ③ eliciting articulation. This study conducted interviews with 11 participating students regarding the April 2025 performance. Interview topics focused on challenges encountered during preparations leading up to the performance day and the methods used to resolve them. The findings revealed that challenges in opera production fell into two categories: “musical content” (e.g., singing, acting, pronunciation, piano accompaniment) and “non-musical tasks” (e.g., props, lighting, costumes, day-of emceeing, subtitles, program booklet creation). Solutions were categorized into six types: (1) guidance from instructors, (2) peer assistance, (3) expert advice, (4) searching reference materials, (5) drawing on past experience, and (6) independent research. Analysis revealed the following characteristics of learners’ problem-solving methods: ① Learners tend to adopt a passive attitude toward experts; ② They take a proactive approach primarily when searching for reference materials; ③ Learners strongly tend to tackle problems collaboratively with friends or seniors; ④ Learners with less experience take fewer proactive approaches compared to those with more experience. Additionally, some learners took action to solve problems but did not reach a complete resolution. Based on the above, the timing for the three types of scaff olding indicated by prior research and the target learners became clear. |
