| 内容記述 | This study examines Frans de Waal’s theory of anthropomorphism and explores its application to animal representation in literature and Japanese language education. Although animal literature occupies a significant position in elementary school language textbooks, current pedagogical approaches predominantly employ an anthropocentric anthropomorphism, treating animals as mere vessels for human emotions and values. This study builds upon de Waal’s theory of anthropomorphism, contributing to the development of a framework for “critical anthropomorphism” in literary contexts. The methodology entails a theoretical analysis of de Waal’s typology of anthropomorphism, an examination of the Umwelt concept, and a literary analysis of Kafka’s “The Metamorphosis” as a case study. The study proposes a novel defi nition of critical anthropomorphism in literature, characterized as “a literary method that imaginatively expresses animals’ subjective experiences through human cognitive frameworks while acknowledging species-specifi c Umwelten and the limitations of such expression.” This approach elucidates how literature can productively engage with the fundamental impossibility of fully accessing non-human experiences while circumventing both reductive anthropocentrism and complete epistemological pessimism. The fi ndings indicate that the incorporation of critical anthropomorphism in the context of Japanese language education can facilitate students’ recognition of anthropocentric biases, foster understanding of otherness, and nurture an openness to diverse worldviews. This pedagogical approach responds expeditiously to the imperative of reimagining human-animal relationships in the Anthropocene era. | |||||||||||||
