| 内容記述 | Previous studies on Jōjin and Chen Yong’s relationship are divided into two views: one sees Chen Yong supporting Jōjin’s pilgrimage through Song merchant networks, while the other argues that he cooperated to engage in Japan-Song trade. The author supports the latter but notes the lack of detailed analysis of “A Record of a Pilgrimage to Tiantai and Wutai Mountains”. This paper examines their relationship by focusing on Chen Yong’s promise to serve as an interpreter, his plans for the pilgrimage, and the significance of his ordination, reevaluating Song merchants’ activities. Chen Yong’s promise was initially limited to the Tiantai pilgrimage. It was unplanned; after Jōjin’s prolonged stay, Chen Yong fulfilled his role and returned to Hangzhou. Later, Jōjin was granted imperial permission to travel, and Chen Yong was ordered to accompany him. Meanwhile, Song merchant Sun Ji arranged the disciples’ return, and Chen Yong’s ordination allowed him to travel to Japan as an envoy. Their relationship shifted from Chen Yong’s unilateral support to mutual cooperation. The Song merchants of the late 11th century formed not only connections but also competitive relationships. |
