内容記述 This study aimed to clarify university students’ comprehension of the relationship between the various timbres and techniques of Koto, a traditional Japanese string instrument, during their lessons in a teacher training course. To objectively assess students’ comprehension, the music-making process and musical pieces of 47 students in the final phase of the Koto lessons were analyzed. The findings revealed that most students created Koto pieces using various techniques. Basic techniques and those that created beautiful impressions were frequently employed, whereas techniques that produced noise were used less often. Examining the music-making process revealed that students typically created pieces by playing their instruments to explore the sound and timbre, primarily using techniques they could play and enjoyed. Additionally, many students recognized the connection between musical structures and techniques when creating pieces. However, it was evident that students faced challenges related to musical structure, selecting which techniques to use, and their own performances. These results indicate that the students acquired various techniques as creative materials during lessons, focusing on how to integrate what they learned while being aware of the musical structure. However, this process presented challenges. Music-making activities provided students with the opportunity to carefully explore and confirm the timbres and techniques they decided to include in their own musical pieces, emphasizing that this was a crucial aspect of learning Koto. This study highlights the importance of learning timbres and techniques within a musical context and the necessity for music students to consider how to teach using Koto in school music lessons, considering works created by learners as reflections of their learning.
