内容記述 According to the Buddhist theory of karmic fruition, if sentient beings accumulate virtuous or unvirtuous karma, they experience karmic fruition (vipāka) in the next life. However, we can find an exceptional case in some Buddhist scriptures. According to the early Buddhist scriptures, such as the Aṅguttaranikāya and Sam. yuttanikāya, it is possible for sentient beings to extinguish the fruition of unvirtuous karma or to experience its karmic fruition in this life through the cultivation of the four immeasurables (appammaññā, cf. Enomoto 1989). This idea also figures in some Abhidharma and Mahāyāna literature, such as Vasubandhu’s (ca. 350–430) Abhidharmakośabhāṣya and Bhāviveka’s (ca. 490–570) Tarkajvālā. According to Vasubandhu’s understanding, it is impossible to experience karmic fruition either in advance or in a mitigated form, since the karmic fruition of determinate karma (niyatavedanīya[karman]), such as karma that brings immediate retribution (ānantaryakarman, e.g., patricide), is inevitably experienced. On the other hand, the fruition of indeterminate karma (aniyatavedanīya[karman]) can be experienced either in advance or in a mitigated form, since its karmic fruition is not necessarily experienced (Sasaki 1990: 213). Bhāviveka, in contrast with Vasubandhu, suggests that even karma whose fruition is supposed to be experienced in the next life can, under certain conditions, result in the experience of its karmic fruition in this life. The later dGe lugs pa scholar bSe Ngag dbang bkra shis (1678–1738), in his rTen ’brel chen mo, based on Bhāviveka’s idea, focuses on the story of King Ajātaśatru, who killed his father, King Bimbisāra. He asserts that King Ajātaśatru was neither reborn in hell nor experienced its suffering, but instead experienced merely a headache in this life. According to his understanding, this is the true, meaning of nullifying karma that brings immediate retribution. Ngag dbang bkra shis’s perspective makes a significant contribution to understanding the concepts of determinate and indeterminate karma in both Abhidharma and Mahāyāna Buddhism. Ngag dbang bkra shis clarifies that, without violating the Buddhist theory of karmaic fruition, even sentient beings who have committed karma that brings immediate retribution can still attain salvation.
This paper focuses on the two key questions: [1] Is it possible to nullify the efficacy of karma bringing immediate retribution? [2] What does the concept of “nullification” signify? The aims of this paper to analyze the debate about the nullification of karma bringing immediate retribution in the rTen ’brel chen mo and provide Ngag dbang bkra shis’s view on these questions.
