内容記述 | Daṇḍin’s Sanskrit treatise on poetics, Kāvyādarśa, composed around the 7th century, was transmitted to Tibet after the 13th century, profoundly influencing Tibetan literature while giving rise to a distinctive commentarial tradition independent of its Indian origins. This paper examines the interpretation of Kāvyādarśa 2.11 by the 18th-century Tibetan scholar Khams sprul bstan ’dzin chos kyi nyi ma (1730–1779), focusing on his unique understanding of guṇa (Tib. yon tan). In Kāvyādarśa 2.11, Daṇḍin exemplifies the “description of the essence of a quaity” (guṇasvabhāvokti) with the verse: “The touch of a beloved woman causes his body’s hairs to stand on end, fills the heart with delight, and keeps both eyes firmly closed.” According to Khams sprul’s commentary, this verse illustrates the diverse qualifying attributes (khyad chos) inherent in the quality of “touch.” While the earlier commentary by the Fifth Dalai Lama interprets guṇa as referring to the five sensual pleasures (’dod pa’i yon tan lnga)—color/form, sound, scent, taste, and touch—Khams sprul critiques this view. He argues that gun. a not only encompasses the five sensual pleasures but also extends to the three guṇa of Sāṁkhya philosophy—sattva (“purity”), rajas (“passion”), and tamas (“darkness”)—as well as phenomena such as heavenly bliss, the suffering of lower realms, and the flow of a river. Furthermore, Khams sprul elaborates on the Sāṁkhya theory of the three guṇas, proposing an original interpretation that gun. as are attributes possessed by puruṣa (“the Self”). Although Khams sprul’s understanding of the three guṇas is not without problem, his commentary clearly demonstrates an effort to interpret Kāvyādarśa 2.11 by fully engaging his extensive knowledge of Indian philosophical traditions. |
