内容記述タイプ Abstract
内容記述 The Jātakamālā by Haribhaṭṭa (ca. fifth-century CE) is a collection of Buddhist legends written in amixture of ornate prose and verse, called campū. This work has thirty-five legends, out of which, sixteen have their parallels in the Bodhisattvāvadānakalpalatā of Kṣemendra (ca. eleventh-century CE). Martin Straube attempts to examine the hypothesis proposed by Michael Hahn that Kṣemendra’s version of the sixteen legends can be traced back to that of Haribhaṭṭa’s. However, no attempt has been made to understand the difference between the attitudes adopted by the two poets toward their adaptations of these sixteen legends. This paper makes this attempt, focusing on the legend of Prince Sudhana to the description of which Haribhaṭṭa and Kṣemendra devote the twenty-fifth chapter of the Jātakamālā and the sixty-fourth chapter of the Bodhisattvāvadānakalpalatā, respectively.
A scrutiny of Haribhaṭṭa’s version reveals sophistication in style and language. His use of yamaka in accordance with the fundamental rules laid down by the theorist Bhāmaha and with some examples shown by the theorist Dan.d. in indicates his familiarity with poetics. Stylistic devices intended to evoke a particular emotion in a listener conform to the standards of poetry. In contrast, Haribhaṭṭa’s version has features that are of rare occurrence in poetry ascribed to Kālidāsa and his successors, such as a portrayal of peasant life in a picturesque style and a type of yamaka in which the repetition of the same word in a different sense occurs. Some of these features are commonly found in the works of A´svaghoṣa, which makes it likely that Haribhaṭṭa’s version was written in a period where poetic tradition still allowed poets considerable freedom in subject matter and expression.
A distinctive feature of Kṣemendra’s version is that the poet does not concentrate on the details of the plot of the legend,
but devotes himself to describing a repertoire of epic poetry in a figurative style. This fact suggests that the poet wrote his version in a period where poetic tradition had little room for freedom in style and form. Therefore, it is reasonable to suppose that Kṣemendra was conscious of the tradition and made a considerable effort to meet the requirements of poetic theory. As a consequence, it seems to follow that a harmonious balance between narrative and descriptive parts was not achieved in his version.
