| 内容記述 | This paper provides an annotated Japanese translation of chapter 123 from Book 1 of the Mahābhārata, based on the Poona critical edition. This section was excluded from Prof. Kamimura’s Japanese translation series of this monumental epic. The chapter in question describes the scene where the princes of the Pāṇḍava and Kaurava factions receive martial training under their instructor, Droṇa. It provides culturally valuable material by showcasing the weaponry and training techniques of the time. This chapter is also significant as it highlights the status and correct use of the bow and arrow, which were the primary weapons in ancient India. Moreover, this chapter recounts a key moment when Arjuna, one of the five Pāṇḍava brothers, demonstrates his qualities as the greatest archer and hero of the epic. Simultaneously, the introduction of the superior archer, Ekalavya, unsettles Arjuna’s confidence and reveals a deeply human aspect of him. This chapter is thus crucial for analyzing Arjuna’s portrayal in the epic. In the scene following the princes’ training, Droṇa grants his beloved disciple, Arjuna, the most powerful divine weapon, the Brahmśiras “Brahman’s head”. In this paper, we will start by discussing the significance and aspects of the bow and arrow in ancient India. Following this, there will be a brief overview of the events leading up to chapter 123 of Book 1, along with an introduction to the key characters (Droṇa, Arjuna, and Ekalavya) in the story of this chapter. |
