First, I will review foreign studies on the continuity of English prose as represented in Chambers’s On the Continuity of English Prose from Alfred to More and his School (1932) and Gordon’s The Movement of English Prose (1966), and then reconsider Masui’s “An English Linguistics Focusing on Expression” (in Japanese) (1963) and “An Attempt at the History of English Expression I: Descriptive and Historical Expressionism in English: Focusing on Literary Texts” (in Japanese) (1968), which advocated the history of English expression, and Yamamoto’s Growth and System of the Language of Dickens: An Introduction to A Dickens Lexicon (1950, 2003 3rd)), which proposed the importance of diachronic studies of idioms, as domestic studies. Then, I will consider recent historical stylistic theories as in Bray’s “ A Portrait of Historical Stylistics” (2014) and Busse’s “(New) Historical Stylistics.” (2014) and “New Historical Stylistics” (2016) from overseas, and clarify my position of the research of historical stylistic theory in Anglo-American literature.\nThe second is to provide a framework for the study of body part\nexpressions in English and American literature from a diachronic or synchronic perspective as an attempt at historical stylistic theory in English and American literature. As an example of the study of historical stylistic theory, this chapter studies diachronic aspects of a body part expression eyes in English and American literary works. This chronological study might serve as a promising bridge between linguistics and literary history as a tentative approach to historical stylistics.\nThe next task is to construct a more detailed framework for body part representation in historical literary theory by referring to the application of cognitive and pragmatic linguistics to literary texts as exemplified by Culpepper’s Language and Characterisation: People in Plays and Other Texts (2001) and a critical framework and functions for the application and the analysis on body language to literary texts by Korte’s Body Language in Literature (1997). As seen in Yamamoto (1950, 2003 3rd) and Masui (1968), the need for historical research on literary works has long been advocated in Japan. In the future, based on overseas trends, I would like to clarify the continuity of the style of diachronic English-American literary works, and the creativity of the language produced in leaps and discontinuities, and disseminate the results of my research from Japan to the world.","subitem_description_language":"en","subitem_description_type":"Abstract"}]},"item_1617186643794":{"attribute_name":"Publisher","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_publisher":"広島大学英文学会","subitem_publisher_language":"ja"},{"subitem_publisher":"The English Literary Association of Hiroshima University","subitem_publisher_language":"en"}]},"item_1617186702042":{"attribute_name":"Language","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_language":"jpn"}]},"item_1617186819068":{"attribute_name":"Identifier Registration","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_identifier_reg_text":"10.15027/0002040622","subitem_identifier_reg_type":"JaLC"}]},"item_1617186920753":{"attribute_name":"Source Identifier","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_source_identifier":"0288-2876","subitem_source_identifier_type":"ISSN"}]},"item_1617187056579":{"attribute_name":"Bibliographic Information","attribute_value_mlt":[{"bibliographicIssueDates":{"bibliographicIssueDate":"2025-03-30","bibliographicIssueDateType":"Issued"},"bibliographicNumberOfPages":"30","bibliographicPageEnd":"30","bibliographicPageStart":"1","bibliographicVolumeNumber":"69","bibliographic_titles":[{"bibliographic_title":"英語英文學研究","bibliographic_titleLang":"ja"},{"bibliographic_title":"Hiroshima studies in English language and literature","bibliographic_titleLang":"en"}]}]},"item_1617258105262":{"attribute_name":"Resource Type","attribute_value_mlt":[{"resourcetype":"departmental bulletin paper","resourceuri":"http://purl.org/coar/resource_type/c_6501"}]},"item_1617265215918":{"attribute_name":"Version Type","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_version_resource":"http://purl.org/coar/version/c_970fb48d4fbd8a85","subitem_version_type":"VoR"}]},"item_1617605131499":{"attribute_name":"File","attribute_type":"file","attribute_value_mlt":[{"accessrole":"open_access","date":[{"dateType":"Available","dateValue":"2025-05-21"}],"filename":"HiroshimaStud-EnglLangLit_69_1.pdf","filesize":[{"value":"1.1 MB"}],"format":"application/pdf","mimetype":"application/pdf","url":{"objectType":"fulltext","url":"https://hiroshima.repo.nii.ac.jp/record/2040622/files/HiroshimaStud-EnglLangLit_69_1.pdf"},"version_id":"7fa5efba-ac9b-41ff-8788-ac942014a05e"}]},"item_1617620223087":{"attribute_name":"Heading","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_heading_banner_headline":"論文","subitem_heading_language":"ja"},{"subitem_heading_banner_headline":"Articles","subitem_heading_language":"en"}]},"item_title":"英米文学作品における歴史文体論と身体表現 eyes の通時的研究","item_type_id":"40036","owner":"83","path":["1747637439499"],"pubdate":{"attribute_name":"PubDate","attribute_value":"2025-05-21"},"publish_date":"2025-05-21","publish_status":"0","recid":"2040622","relation_version_is_last":true,"title":["英米文学作品における歴史文体論と身体表現 eyes の通時的研究"],"weko_creator_id":"83","weko_shared_id":-1},"updated":"2025-05-21T04:14:27.758953+00:00"}
