The island’s designation as a national park and cultural heritage site subjects it to rigorous conservation protocols, with previous sediment disasters having underscored the importance of implementing sustainable revegetation strategies. Contemporary restoration approaches emphasize regional biodiversity conservation by utilizing local provenance plant materials (seeds and seedlings) due to the critical importance of preventing genetic disruption and supporting effective ecosystem restoration. The island has experienced increased natural disasters in recent years, necessitating ecological restoration through revegetation initiatives. These revegetation efforts enhance ecosystem services by promoting vegetation recovery, controlling soilerosion, maintaining landscape integrity, and contributing to climate change mitigation. This research presents the revegetation practices undertaken on the island. It demonstrates their contributions to not only biodiversity conservation but also to carbon neutrality objectives and sustainable development goals, and nature-based solutions (NbS). The documented outcomes demonstrate the efficacy of native plant materials in ecological restoration projects.
