| 内容記述 | The awarding of the 2024 Nobel Peace Prize to Nihon Hidankyo (Japan Confederation of A-and-H-Bomb Sufferers Organizations) has brought increased attention to hibakusha’s dedicated efforts to achieve a nuclear weapons-free world. However, in comparison to its antinuclear campaigns, Nihon Hidankyo’s pursuit of state compensation for the atomic bomb damage—another central pillar of its activism—has received less consideration. The present article aims to provide an overview of the meaning of this essential demand. First, its ideological components and evolution within the history of Nihon Hidankyo’s movement are outlined. Thereafter, the results of three studies focused on the individual-level significance of the demand for state compensation among hibakusha are summarized. The reviewed studies are based on data collected by nationwide surveys conducted by Nihon Hidankyo and Asahi Shimbun in 2005 and allow for discussing the multilayered meaning of this request from several perspectives, including its positioning within the other demands put forth by hibakusha and its relation to the various aspects of the long-lasting suffering caused by the atomic bombings. | |||||||||||||
