| 内容記述 | As society becomes more multicultural, Japanese language education at universities is undergoing a transformation. It should not only to improve individual language skills, but also support international students’ connection with the community to become active members of society. This paper is a practical report on the introduction of service learning (SL) at the “Children's Cafeteria” in the Japanese Studies course; SL is an educational method that promotes practical learning through community contribution. Prior analytical perspective was incorporated into the reflection of the individual, group and class. As a result, international students learned the following: (1) their preconceptions about the “Children's Cafeteria” changed and they reaffirmed the multifaceted role found there; (2) they realized the significance of human connections through interaction with diverse people; and (3) they gained a sense of joy and satisfaction through community activities, leading to a desire to contribute more. The main reasons for this are as follows. One student in particular understood that the “Children's Cafeteria” is not only a place to serve meals, but also a hub for community interaction, and this changed his prior notion of volunteering to more “fun and meaningful”. Other students understood it as a place that contributes to community connections, and this increased their concern and willingness for others and society. This suggests that actual experience is important for understanding the essence of the “Children's Cafeteria,” which can’t be seen from textbooks, and that SL promotes international students' growth and awareness of social contribution. |
