In this text, Kūkai divides the mind into ten abodes (住心) or stages, and corresponds them to the mental states of the fool and those who follow the teachings of Confucianism, Taoism, and Buddhism. It is clear that the idea of the ten abodes of mind is based on the discourse of the mindstream (心相続) in generating the aspiration for Buddhahood, which is included in Chapter 1 of the Māhavairocana Sūtra (『大日経』住心品). However, it has not been fully studied how Kūkai's idea of the ten abodes of mind was developed from the discourse of the mind in the Mahāvairocana Sūtra.\nIn the period when Kūkai was active, the controversy focusing on enlightenment happened between Saichō and Tokuitsu. It is unclear how Kūkai perceived this controversy. In addition, it should also be discussed how the idea of the ten abodes of mind is related to the attainment of Buddhahood during this lifetime (即身成仏), the central thought of Kūkai.\nThis paper compares and analyzes Kūkai's idea of the first three abodes of mind and the theory of the mindstream in Chapter 1 of the Mahāvairocana Sūtra.
