| 内容記述 | This paper examines a work titled "Hokuro Tennou" published by Ango Sakaguchi in 1954. Originally, the theatrical term “farce” refer to an independent form of funny skit performed between the acts of religious plays in medieval Europe. However, Ango formulated “farce”, traditionally considered a type of comedy, as third theatrical style along with tragedy and comedy. His unique view of “farce” has always been the focus of attention in the history of Ango literature studies. However, it is only his early works that are intensively mentioned, and his postwar works have not been studied much from the perspective of “farce”. “Hokuro Tennou” is such a postwar piece. In this paper, I considered the possibility of reinterpreting "Hokuro Tennou" as a “farce” and why it was necessary to write this work as a “farce” in light of Ango's theory of “farce” and postwar discourse on “the agrarian mind”. After the war, Ango called Japanese people’s exclusivity, individualism, and mentality of avoiding responsibility “the agrarian mind”, and criticized it as a major factor that pushed Japan toward war. The analysis yielded the following results. I n " Hokuro Tennou", the literary style of "farce" was chosen to thoroughly portray a "human being" like the main character "Kyuusaku", including their contradictions. |
