内容記述タイプ Abstract
内容記述 The origin of the National Research Fellowship System, as it is known today, was initiated by theNational Research Council (NRC) during World War I. From the standpoint of university history research, theauthor regards the National Research Fellowship Program as “the pioneer of modern research fellowshipprograms”. The National Research Fellowship was a fellowship for young scholars who had just completedtheir Ph.D. It adopted a nationwide open application system, conducted a rigorous academic review bycommittee, and guaranteed sufficient financial support comparable to the salary of a university facultymember, thereby playing a decisive role in establishing the meaning of a special research fellowship. Itsinfluence can be traced to the current PDF system of the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science.
However, there was a precedent for the National Research Fellowship System, which can be called theoriginal form of the system. This was the Fellowship Program at the Johns Hopkins University (hereafterreferred to as JHU), founded in 1876.
This paper first looks at the establishment of the JHU and the position of the Fellowship Program at JHU.Next, it examines how President Gilman’s vision was realized through the case study of Charles R. Lanman, one of the first 20 Fellows hired by JHU in its pioneering period. It also explores how he lived his academiclife as a Fellow at JHU. Finally, the paper considers the significance for us today of the new image of theresearcher that emerged at the end of the 19th century in the history of American universities.
Johns Hopkins University established a system that allows all young researchers, especially those in thepostdoctoral fellowship program, to achieve significant results. This paper argues that Johns Hopkins was auniversity that had successfully implemented Gilman's vision of research and its institutionalization, frompolicy to practice and even institutional culture. In this sense, Johns Hopkins was the first research-orienteduniversity in the history of American universities.
