Currently, interactive text is used in elementary school textbooks and books for early learners. However, previous research has shown that interactive text does not always promote comprehension. This study examined the effects of interactive text on text representation, as compared to the effects of explanatory text, based on a construction-integration model that assumed three levels of representation: surface form, text base, and situation model. The tasks within Experiments 1 and 2 were recognition tests designed to identify the three levels of representation. The results of these experiments demonstrated that there was no interaction, and the interactive text has no effect on performances of the test types.
