Mīmāṃsā supports ontological pluralism that is suitable for ritual contexts, whereas Vedānta, especially the Advaita tradition, develops a monistic worldview grounded in transcendental principles, such as Ātman and Brahman. In this paper, I aim to elucidate an aspect of the conflict between pluralism and monism in the history of Indian philosophy, focusing on concepts such as nonexistence (abhāva) and difference (bheda), with reference to the discussions of Kumārilabhaṭṭa and Maṇḍanamiśra.\n In the Pratyakṣapariccheda chapter of the Ślokavārttika (ŚV), Kumārila criticizes the monistic view and presents the idea that every object possesses both universal (sāmānya, common property) and particular (viśeṣa, differentiating property) as its nature. In the Ākṛtivāda chapter of the ŚV, he further explores this dual nature of reality in greater detail, arguing that reality has a ‘variegated’ (citra) nature, consisting of both common and differentiating properties in relation to others. These arguments illustrate his pluralistic view that objects are distinct from one another by their very nature. In the Abhāvapariccheda chapter of the ŚV, Kumārila asserts that every entity is existent by its own nature and is nonexistent by the nature of others. Each thing has a mutual nonexistence (anyonya-abhāva) in relation to things of different kinds, which prevents them from mixing with one another.\nMaṇḍanamiśra criticizes Kumārila’s arguments outlined above in the so-called ‘Tarkakāṇḍa’ section of the Brahmasiddhi. First, while he argues that perception has only positive functions and no negative functions, he refutes the validity of abhāva-pramāṇa as asserted by Kumārila. Furthermore, in the latter part of the Tarkakāṇḍa, Maṇḍana inquires which of the two types of knowledge—knowledge of difference (bheda) and knowledge of non-difference (abheda), both of which are experienced in everyday life — is correct. In answering this question, he criticizes Kumārila ’s notion, such as the variegated nature of reality and the mutual nonexistence (anyonya-abhāva) of things. In this section of Brahmasiddhi, Maṇḍana attempts to demonstrate logically that the monistic teachings of the scriptures remain unshaken by the apparent diversity of the phenomenal world.","subitem_description_language":"en","subitem_description_type":"Abstract"},{"subitem_description":"広島大学比較論理学プロジェクト研究センター研究成果報告書(2024年度)","subitem_description_language":"ja","subitem_description_type":"Other"},{"subitem_description":"The Annals of the Research Project Center for the Comparative Study of Logic (2024)","subitem_description_language":"en","subitem_description_type":"Other"}]},"item_1617186643794":{"attribute_name":"Publisher","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_publisher":"広島大学比較論理学プロジェクト研究センター","subitem_publisher_language":"ja"},{"subitem_publisher":"Research Project Center for the Comparative Study of Logic,Hiroshima University","subitem_publisher_language":"en"}]},"item_1617186702042":{"attribute_name":"Language","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_language":"jpn"}]},"item_1617186819068":{"attribute_name":"Identifier Registration","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_identifier_reg_text":"10.15027/0002040420","subitem_identifier_reg_type":"JaLC"}]},"item_1617186901218":{"attribute_name":"Funding Reference","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_award_numbers":{"subitem_award_number":"21H00472","subitem_award_uri":"https://kaken.nii.ac.jp/ja/grant/KAKENHI-PROJECT-23K20420/"},"subitem_award_titles":[{"subitem_award_title":"インド哲学における「無」の思想","subitem_award_title_language":"ja"},{"subitem_award_title":"The concept of absence and negation in Indian philosophy","subitem_award_title_language":"en"}],"subitem_funder_identifiers":{"subitem_funder_identifier_type":"Crossref Funder","subitem_funder_identifier_type_uri":"https://doi.org/10.13039/501100001691"},"subitem_funder_names":[{"subitem_funder_name":"日本学術振興会","subitem_funder_name_language":"ja"},{"subitem_funder_name":"Japan Society for the Promotion of Science","subitem_funder_name_language":"en"}]},{"subitem_award_numbers":{"subitem_award_number":"23K20420","subitem_award_uri":"https://kaken.nii.ac.jp/ja/grant/KAKENHI-PROJECT-23K20420/"},"subitem_award_titles":[{"subitem_award_title":"インド哲学における「無」の思想","subitem_award_title_language":"ja"},{"subitem_award_title":"The concept of absence and negation in Indian philosophy","subitem_award_title_language":"en"}],"subitem_funder_identifiers":{"subitem_funder_identifier_type":"Crossref Funder","subitem_funder_identifier_type_uri":"https://doi.org/10.13039/501100001691"},"subitem_funder_names":[{"subitem_funder_name":"日本学術振興会","subitem_funder_name_language":"ja"},{"subitem_funder_name":"Japan Society for the Promotion of Science","subitem_funder_name_language":"en"}]}]},"item_1617186920753":{"attribute_name":"Source Identifier","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_source_identifier":"1880-6376","subitem_source_identifier_type":"ISSN"}]},"item_1617187056579":{"attribute_name":"Bibliographic Information","attribute_value_mlt":[{"bibliographicIssueDates":{"bibliographicIssueDate":"2025-03-25","bibliographicIssueDateType":"Issued"},"bibliographicIssueNumber":"23(特別号)","bibliographicNumberOfPages":"19","bibliographicPageEnd":"115","bibliographicPageStart":"97","bibliographic_titles":[{"bibliographic_title":"比較論理学研究","bibliographic_titleLang":"ja"},{"bibliographic_title":"The Annals of the Research Project Center for the Comparative Study of Logic","bibliographic_titleLang":"en"}]}]},"item_1617258105262":{"attribute_name":"Resource Type","attribute_value_mlt":[{"resourcetype":"departmental bulletin paper","resourceuri":"http://purl.org/coar/resource_type/c_6501"}]},"item_1617265215918":{"attribute_name":"Version Type","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_version_resource":"http://purl.org/coar/version/c_970fb48d4fbd8a85","subitem_version_type":"VoR"}]},"item_1617605131499":{"attribute_name":"File","attribute_type":"file","attribute_value_mlt":[{"accessrole":"open_access","date":[{"dateType":"Available","dateValue":"2025-04-24"}],"filename":"Ann-ResProjCent-CompStudLogic_23_97.pdf","filesize":[{"value":"366 KB"}],"format":"application/pdf","mimetype":"application/pdf","url":{"objectType":"fulltext","url":"https://hiroshima.repo.nii.ac.jp/record/2040420/files/Ann-ResProjCent-CompStudLogic_23_97.pdf"},"version_id":"85993816-1be0-4ac5-ad84-16402152e402"}]},"item_title":"別異のオントロジー : 多元論と一元論の相克","item_type_id":"40036","owner":"83","path":["1745298123974"],"pubdate":{"attribute_name":"PubDate","attribute_value":"2025-04-25"},"publish_date":"2025-04-25","publish_status":"0","recid":"2040420","relation_version_is_last":true,"title":["別異のオントロジー : 多元論と一元論の相克"],"weko_creator_id":"83","weko_shared_id":-1},"updated":"2025-04-24T01:05:08.431043+00:00"}
