内容記述 | The starting point of the Navya-nyāya method of analysis is found in Udayana (ca. 11th cent.), and the method is established by Gaṅgeśa (ca. 14th cent.). This paper aims to illustrate how Gaṅgeśa was influenced by Udayana in a particular context, such as the discussion of the cognition of past absence. This absence is not that which was cognized in the past, but that which is later affirmed in retrospect. For this task, I have dealt with Gaṅgeśa’s Tattvacintāmaṇi, the “Non-perception Chapter” (Anupalabdhivāda) and Udayana’s Nyāyavārttikatātparyapariśuddhi (NVTP) on Nyāyasūtra 1.1.4. Gaṅgeśa presents the view of the Bhaṭṭa school of Mīmāṃsā regarding how to cognize absence in general in the preceding large objection section (pūrvapakṣa) of the chapter. According to this school, the cognition of absence is acquired through the sixth means of acquiring cognition (pramāṇa), i.e. non-perception (anupalabdhi), while according to the Nyāya school, it is acquired through sense organs. In the beginning of the latter half of his final view (uttarapakṣa), in order to corroborate its view of non-perception, the Bhaṭṭa school illustrates a case in which no sense organ can function as grasping a past absence. Gaṅgeśa devotes the remaining half to the discussion of how to grasp the past absence in the above case and concludes that such an absence is cognized by means of inference, and not by non-perception. Gaṅgeśa’s argumentation primarily follows Udayana’s. I have shown six similar points of argumentation between them; surprisingly, each point appears in the same order in their two texts. On the other hand, I have presented three points which Udayana does not argue. The first and second points of those three are not necessarily Gaṅgeśa’s amazing improvements over Udayana’s claim. The third point may represent his talent to surpass Udayana; he provides an improvement of the syllogism (prayoga) over Udayana’s which is stated in his Kiraṇāvalī but not in the NVTP to establish that the cognition of that past absence is acquired through inference. To sum up, Gaṅgeśa’s contribution consists of two respects: more intelligible interpretation of Udayana’s argument and his improved syllogism. This proves that Udayana’s NVTP as well as his Nyāyakumāñjali exerts considerable influences on Gaṅgeśa in contexts. His Kiraṇāvalī is also helpful in investigating his influence on Gaṅgeśa. | |||||||||
