内容記述 This study examines the post-shelter lives of female survivors of human trafficking for sexual exploitation in Northeast Thailand, exploring the factors that lead some to re-enter trafficking or become perpetrators. Many survivors paradoxically struggle with social reintegration despite having received support in shelters.
Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 24 Thai female survivors aged 18–23 between March and April 2023. Each interview lasted between 1 hour 15 minutes and 2 hours 30 minutes, adhering to the WHO Ethical and Safety Recommendations for Interviewing Trafficked Women (WHO, 2003), with informed consent obtained. Thematic analysis in this study led to the classification of survivors into five categories: Stable Employed Survivors, Low-income Survivors, Economically Supported Survivors, Potential Re-entrant Survivors, and Re-entrant Survivors.
Findings indicate that the primary cause of re-entry is not merely economic hardship but “relational deprivation”. Survivors who successfully reintegrated often had support from family or NGOs, which enabled them to complete lower-or upper-secondary education and secure stable employment. In contrast, Re-Entrant Survivors lacked support, faced limited job opportunities due to not completing lower-secondary education, and had no one to consult when in need. Another common factor among Re-Entrant Survivors was their tendency to perceive past relationships with their brokers positively, interpreting the temporary support they provided as care or affection, which led to dependency.
To prevent re-entry, a Multilayered and Interacted Support Network is essential, where families, educators, NGOs, shelters, and healthcare providers collaborate to establish a holistic and sustainable support system. Additionally, prioritizing secondary education is crucial for expanding employment opportunities and enhancing survivors' long-term independence. Continuous post-shelter engagement through regular follow-ups by NGOs, shelter staff, or sometimes, even a simple message exchange alone can help mitigate social isolation and reduce the risk of re-entry.
This study highlights the limitations of conventional reintegration models, which prioritize individual self-sufficiency and economic stability while overlooking the importance of "social re-inclusion". Instead, it emphasizes the necessity of comprehensive societal support as fundamental to preventing reentry and ensuring stable reintegration. Addressing relational deprivation through a multi-institutional support system is key to achieving sustainable social re-inclusion for survivors. Future research should explore the role of educational institutions and community-based interventions in fostering long-term social inclusion.
