| 内容記述 | This paper explores the development and crisis of “Japanology as area studies” in China through a critical review of the concept of “area studies.” It identifies two key factors limiting the global recognition of Chinese Japanese studies. First, the field lacks effective integration and interdisciplinary collaboration, which impedes a comprehensive understanding of Japan. Second, traditional disciplines tend to prioritize foundational research over its relevance to contemporary issues, leading to a disconnect from practical applications and a marginalization of the field. In contrast, Japanese studies focusing on political realities and international relations emphasize immediate international and policy concerns while neglecting cultural perspectives inherent in traditional disciplines. This narrow scope reduces such research to transient, situational studies or ideological substitutes. This paper also advocates for advancing Japanese studies as area studies in China. Drawing on the work of American scholar Harry D. Harootunian, it also provides an epistemological critique of the power dynamics and ideological structures embedded in area studies. The paper concludes that transcendent perspectives and reflective critical thinking fostered by interdisciplinary approaches are essential for the success of Chinese Japanese studies as “area studies.” Incorporating cultural studies perspectives into the framework of area studies is vital to achieving this goal. | |||||||||
