In this area, the sedimentation rate increased after 3rd century, especially after 17th century, and natural levee/back marsh was formed in various parts of the floodplain. When the natural levee/back marsh began to form, the Ota River flowed near Gion in its western part, where the Yasukawa River flows today. The river was diverted from this channel around the beginning of the 7th century, and then flowed through this area again around the beginning of the Middle Ages. From then to the present, the Ota River changed its course to the location of the present Furukawa River, and the present mainstream, in that order.
