いじめ場面における傍観者の役割取得と共感が傍観者自身のいじめ関連行動に及ぼす影響について検討を行った。調査においては, 役割取得と共感の対象として, いじめ場面における加害者, 被害者, 観衆, 傍観者の4者を仮定した。243名を対象としたシナリオ法を用いた質問紙調査を行った結果, 役割取得は加害者, 被害者, 観衆, 傍観者の4者全てに対して生じていたのに比べて, 共感は加害者, 被害者, 傍観者の3者に対してのみ生じていた。さらに, 傍観者のいじめ関連行動には, 「はやしたて行動」, 「被害者援助行動」, 「傍観行動」の3種類があり, このうち「はやしたて行動」はいじめ場面においては生じないことが示された。これらの変数を用いて因果モデルを検討した結果, いじめ関連行動に対して影響を持つのは, 共感よりもむしろ役割取得であることが示された。また, 傍観者に対する役割取得は被害者援助行動を抑制, 傍観行動を促進し, それとは逆に被害者に対する役割取得は被害者援助行動を促進,
