Both studies examine whether students write more if their instructor assigns them a topic or if they choose their own topic. 75 Japanese university students in four classes participated in six 10-minute freewriting sessions, three with teacher assigned topics and three with student chosen topics. In addition, students completed a post-study survey on their topic selection preferences.
