The purpose of this paper is to discuss the Chinese media's perception of Shibusawa Eiichi and how his speeches during the China visit were comprehended, by analyzing relevant newspaper articles. Shortly before the outbreak of World War I, China was cautious about Japan and was distrustful about Shibusawa Eiichi's visit to China. At the same time, due to Shibusawa Eiichi's profound understanding of Chinese history, Chinese culture and Confucianism, his visit was highly expected. Such complicated feelings were included in Chinese newspaper articles about Shibusawa Eiichi's China visit.
