地理教育の基礎である地図を初等・中等教育の教育課程においてどのように取り扱うかを検討する1試案である。地図は大きく, 中・小縮尺図(ほぼ都道府県レベル以上)と大縮尺図(身近な地域レベル)に分けて考えるととらえやすくなる。社会科・地理教育関連の教科書・副教材等における扱われ方をみると, 様々な場面で地図が使用されていること, そして中・小縮尺図が圧倒的に多く利用されていることに気付く。地図というものが児童・生徒にとって様々な機会で情報源・分析や発表手段等に使用されている状況下で, その効果を高めるためにどのような地図教育が行われたらよいのかを, 初等・中等教育を通したカリキュラムにおいて様々な角度から調べようとするものである。近年, 中等教育6年制或いは小中高一貫の観点が取り上げられ始めたところであり, 地図教育のカリキュラムに関する検討も少ない現状で, 今から求められる趨勢にあるといえよう。「地図が重要」, 「地図こそが地理(教育)の特徴」といいつつ, 地図の存在を自明のものとして使っている現状と判断し, まさにその現状が「地図が不得手」「地図に親しみを持たない」生徒を多くしている原因の一つと考える。こうした現状を鑑み, 小・中・高等学校の12年間における地図の理解及び活用を整理するマトリックスづくりは地理教育において極めて有益である。本報告は, その第一歩をしるす短報として,
