 源氏の誕生にまつわる桐壺帝とその最愛の更衣の情熱的な恋愛は、後者の早世によって不幸な結果を迎える。若い寵姫の火葬は、同じく茶毘に付される他三者の死とともに、第一章の悲劇性に拍車をかける。しかし、死者から立ち昇る灰色の煙は、まわりの空気に混じり溶け込み、残された生者を包む。空を満たす朧ろな気体は生命の素となり、煙としての死は、いわば新たな生の出発点と考えられる。安定した貴族社会を描きながら、作者は、自然の循環の中の、その一部としての人間の姿を明示する。息の長い、主語のしばしば省略される捉え難い文章は、宙に漂う灰色の煙そのもののイメージを与え、死と生は密接に結びつき絡み合っているという仏教的な思想を体現する。作者はまた語り手の慰藉の声によって、読者を死の絶望的な恐怖から救うと同時に、不確かな現世に身を処す自分自身の救済を試みるのである。  例の透明な秋の夜の場面では、やわらかな月光が死者の煙の分身となり、桐壺更衣の美しい姿が甦る。更衣に生き写しの藤壺女御は、義理の母として、源氏の禁忌の対象となり、第二章以降展開される彼の恋愛遍歴の要因となる。
