Therefore, this brief report reviewed how subjects can direct decending motor commands to specific pools of motoneurons. To test the excitability of the relevant pools of motoneurons, percutaneous stimulation of the motor cortex (motor evoked potentials ; MEPs) was used. A major conclusion from our most recent results and the previous reports was that subjects can learn to activate a limited group of CNS neurons in the absence any changes in peripheral feedback. Moreover, subjects can learn to fractionate subthreshold descending motor commands to intrinsic muscles without recourse to afferent feedback.
