The Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) is to date the only normal external galaxy that has been detected in high-energy gamma rays. High-energy gamma rays trace particle acceleration processes and gamma-ray observations allow the nature and sites of acceleration to be studied. Aims. We characterise the distribution and sources of cosmic rays in the LMC from analysis of gamma-ray observations. Methods. We analyse 11 months of continuous sky-survey observations obtained with the Large Area Telescope aboard the Fermi Gamma-Ray Space Telescope and compare it to tracers of the interstellar medium and models of the gamma-ray sources in the LMC. Results. The LMC is detected at 33σ significance. The integrated >100 MeV photon flux of the LMC amounts to (2.6 ± 0.2) × 10-7 ph cm-2 s-1 which corresponds to an energy flux of (1.6 ± 0.1) × 10-10 erg cm-2 s-1, with additional systematic uncertainties of 16%. The analysis reveals the massive star forming region 30 Doradus as a bright source of gamma-ray emission in the LMC in addition to fainter emission regions found in the northern part of the galaxy. The gamma-ray emission from the LMC shows very little correlation with gas density and is rather correlated to tracers of massive star forming regions. The close confinement of gamma-ray emission to star forming regions suggests a relatively short GeV cosmic-ray proton diffusion length. Conclusions. The close correlation between cosmic-ray density and massive star tracers supports the idea that cosmic rays are accelerated in massive star forming regions as a result of the large amounts of kinetic energy that are input by the stellar winds and supernova explosions of massive stars into the interstellar medium.","subitem_description_language":"en"}]},"item_1617186643794":{"attribute_name":"Publisher","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_publisher":"EDP Sciences S A"}]},"item_1617186702042":{"attribute_name":"Language","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_language":"eng"}]},"item_1617186920753":{"attribute_name":"Source Identifier","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_source_identifier":"0004-6361","subitem_source_identifier_type":"ISSN"},{"subitem_source_identifier":"AA00553195","subitem_source_identifier_type":"NCID"}]},"item_1617187024783":{"attribute_name":"Page Start","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_start_page":"A7-1"}]},"item_1617187056579":{"attribute_name":"Bibliographic Information","attribute_value_mlt":[{"bibliographicIssueDates":{"bibliographicIssueDate":"2010","bibliographicIssueDateType":"Issued"},"bibliographicPageEnd":"A7-15","bibliographicPageStart":"A7-1","bibliographicVolumeNumber":"512","bibliographic_titles":[{"bibliographic_title":"Astronomy & Astrophysics"},{"bibliographic_title":"Astronomy & Astrophysics"}]}]},"item_1617258105262":{"attribute_name":"Resource Type","attribute_value_mlt":[{"resourcetype":"journal article","resourceuri":"http://purl.org/coar/resource_type/c_6501"}]},"item_1617265215918":{"attribute_name":"Version Type","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_version_resource":"http://purl.org/coar/version/c_970fb48d4fbd8a85","subitem_version_type":"VoR"}]},"item_1617353299429":{"attribute_name":"Relation","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_relation_type_id":{"subitem_relation_type_id_text":"10.1051/0004-6361/200913474","subitem_relation_type_select":"DOI"}},{"subitem_relation_type_id":{"subitem_relation_type_id_text":"http://dx.doi.org/10.1051/0004-6361/200913474","subitem_relation_type_select":"DOI"}}]},"item_1617605131499":{"attribute_name":"File","attribute_type":"file","attribute_value_mlt":[{"accessrole":"open_access","date":[{"dateType":"Available","dateValue":"2023-03-18"}],"displaytype":"simple","filename":"AstronAstrophys_512_A7.pdf","filesize":[{"value":"3.8 MB"}],"mimetype":"application/pdf","url":{"objectType":"fulltext","url":"https://hiroshima.repo.nii.ac.jp/record/2006323/files/AstronAstrophys_512_A7.pdf"},"version_id":"7365b094-00bf-4920-a11b-19c1003aa3ca"}]},"item_1732771732025":{"attribute_name":"旧ID","attribute_value":"31168"},"item_title":"Observations of the Large Magellanic Cloud with Fermi","item_type_id":"40003","owner":"41","path":["1730444907710"],"pubdate":{"attribute_name":"PubDate","attribute_value":"2023-03-18"},"publish_date":"2023-03-18","publish_status":"0","recid":"2006323","relation_version_is_last":true,"title":["Observations of the Large Magellanic Cloud with Fermi"],"weko_creator_id":"41","weko_shared_id":-1},"updated":"2025-02-21T07:19:43.420484+00:00"}
