          <datacite:description xml:lang="en" descriptionType="Abstract">In my solfège teaching experience, I encountered a piano tutor who had felt difficulty in playing related to meter in the music. To help her in solving the problem, I conducted an interview with her to find out the causes of the problem, and then guided her with a training method based on the ideas that Jeanne Bamberger (1924-) proposed in her cognitive theory of music. The purpose of this study is to clarify one of the prime requirements of solfège learning, through an analysis of the process involved in the student’s improvement regarding the problem, and considerations of its result. The analysis revealed that the main cause of the student’s problem was that she did not grasp meter as a compound metric structure (proportional relations among the units of beat). The fact that the student’s problem has been solved by let her understand meter strongly suggests the importance of training that leads students to grasp meter as a compound metric grid in the hierarchical rhythmic structure.</datacite:description>
