Focusing on tutoring institutions as edu-businesses, the article examines how people in urban Indonesia adapt the educational philosophies, methods, and perspectives on life course promoted by organizations to their own societal contexts, creating meaning as they utilize these services and products. The analysis highlights how this process generates new, albeit problematic at times, forms of direct interaction among people facilitated by educational services—interactions that differ from the realities discussed in existing studies, which tend to focus on the provider side. These interactions foster active communication driven by non-economic incentives, such as the educational philosophies promoted by the tutoring institutions. From this perspective, this paper emphasizes the need to analyze the complex nature and nuances of edu-businesses. This includes their role in creating spaces for communication that disseminate organizations’ unique educational philosophies, as well as spaces that can foster feelings of social exclusion.
